CHAPTER SIXTEEN

“Hello?” said Henry into the phone.

“Henry, why are you calling me at work?” asked Su Lee.

“I need your help this time, Su Lee. They’ve found out it was me diverting the shipments. I have to get out of the country.”

There was an eerie silence on the other end of the phone, and Henry’s stomach was swirling with bile.

“Henry, this is not a good time. I cannot risk being found here. You’ll have to wait,” she said calmly.

“Wait? Su Lee, need I remind you that I have come to your rescue every time you’ve called me. I got you out of South Korea. I gave you secrets for my nation to be traded for your life in North Korea and again in China. I’m asking for one thing, my darling. One.”

“It’s not that easy, Henry. It’s very dangerous for me here, and I never know when they are going to come after me again.”

“Su Lee, I’m in trouble!” he yelled into the phone. “I can’t even return to the office. I can’t rely on anyone to help except you. You said you loved me. You said we would be together, and I have done everything you’ve asked. Now, I’m asking that you help me.”

“One moment, Henry, someone is here.”

She placed him on hold again, and he shook his head, frustrated by the endless waiting for her to respond to him. Did she not understand? Did she not know that he had risked his entire future for her? All he wanted was a helping hand to get him out of the country and by her side.

He stared at the weathered photo one more time, running his fingers over her face, her body. That body, the one that had eluded him for almost a decade before she allowed him to finally touch her. They’d made sweet, passionate love, bringing him to tears when it was done.

Her creamy, white flesh lay beside him, and he traced her fine curves with his fingers. She’d pulled away, saying she wasn’t feeling well and he needed to leave. So entranced by her, he was willing to do whatever she wanted. Not even able to shower, he dressed and left her apartment.

The next day, he knocked and knocked on the door. When she didn’t answer, he called her, only to find out that she’d left in the middle of the night, frightened and her enemies chasing her.

“Henry? I’m sorry, it’s impossible to get you here right now. Find somewhere safe to lay low, and I’ll call you in forty-eight hours.”

“Forty-eight hours? Su Lee, I may be dead in forty-eight hours.”

“Then I would make sure you have a safe place to go.”
